By Gary Frost. Originally published in an edition of 100 copies and bound under the supervision of Priscilla A. Spitler during the Paper and Book Intensive at the John Knox Ranch, Fischer, TX, May, 1993. The binding for the original edition was the sewn boards style designed by Gary Frost with a Japanese linen spine, sides of terra cotta Iris book cloth, and Nideggen endpapers. The type was Palatino, worked up in Quark XPress 3.1 by Bradley Hutchinson and xerographically reproduced by Laura A. Wilson on a Sharp 8870 photocopier at BookLab in Austin, TX. The paper was Weyerhauser Cougar Opaque Natural.

In 1984 I left my job as a book conservator at the Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center to start my own business. In the early days of Jensen Bindery, which later became BookLab, Inc., I operated out of my garage in Austin, Texas and my first employee was my good friend Gary McLerran. He worked with me for about 2 years until he and his wife Connie Brooks moved to New York state and later to California where they both have been working at Stanford University–Connie as head of Stanford University Libraries Preservation Department and Gary as Head of Preservation Services at the Hoover Institution.

I am very excited to announce that Gary McLerran, his wife Connie Brooks and their son Michael will soon be moving to San Marcos and beginning September 1, Gary will be joining me as my business partner here at BookLab II.
